Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about our breeding program, our puppies, or what it's like to own a Bellvale Labrador? We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions we receive from prospective puppy owners. If you don’t see your question below, please feel free to contact me directly!

Where are you located?

We are located in Fallston, Maryland, just 35 minutes from Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI).

How long have you been breeding Labradors?

We have been breeding quality English Labradors since 1995, giving us nearly three decades of experience.

What health testing do you conduct on your breeding dogs?

We conduct thorough health testing, including OFA testing for hips, elbows, and eyes, as well as DNA testing through Embark to screen for genetic conditions common in Labradors.  Sire of puppies are cardiac tested and clear.

How are the puppies raised?

Our puppies are raised in our home, not in kennels. This ensures they are well-socialized and comfortable with everyday household activities and environments.

What colors of Labradors do you breed?

We breed English Labradors in three beautiful colors: chocolate, yellow, and black.

How can I reserve a puppy?

You can reserve a puppy by placing a non-refundable $500 deposit, which can be applied to a future litter if needed. Please contact us to discuss availability and begin the reservation process.

Do you offer health guarantees for your puppies?

Yes, each puppy comes with a 26-month health guarantee that covers hereditary hip/elbow dysplasia and hereditary heart disease.

Do you ship puppies?

Yes, we can arrange to ship your puppy with a flight nanny who will accompany the puppy in the cabin. Alternatively, we can meet you at BWI if you prefer to fly to us and take your puppy home personally.

What is included with each puppy?

Every Bellvale Labrador puppy comes with a thorough health examination, a Certificate of Health, all necessary vaccinations and deworming, microchipping, and a starter bag that includes a sample of the puppy’s food, a toy, and a collar.

At what age are puppies ready to go to their new homes?

Our puppies are ready to go to their new homes at 8 weeks of age.

Do you require spaying/neutering?

Yes, puppies sold on Limited Registration are required to be spayed or neutered between 18 and 26 months of age. Early spaying or neutering (before 18 months) will nullify our health guarantee.

What is Limited Registration?

AKC Limited Registration means that your puppy cannot be used for breeding or showing. It ensures that the dog is a pet rather than part of a breeding program.

What if I can no longer care for my Labrador?

If you can no longer care for your Bellvale Labrador, we ask that you return the dog to us. We will gladly take them back and find a loving new home. Please note that no refund will be provided in such cases.

Do you offer any support after I take my puppy home?

Absolutely! We consider you part of the Bellvale Labradors family. We are always available to provide support and answer questions throughout your puppy’s life.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept certified checks and personal checks for the deposit. Final payments are due in cash when you pick up your puppy.

What training recommendations do you have for new puppy owners?

We highly recommend crate training, as it provides a safe space for your puppy and helps prevent accidents. Additionally, we encourage new owners to attend puppy training classes for socialization and basic obedience.

Do you remove dewclaws?

No, we believe that dewclaws serve an important purpose in stabilizing the carpal (wrist) joint, and therefore we do not remove them.

How do I know if a Labrador is the right breed for me?

Labradors are social, family-oriented dogs that thrive on companionship. They are not suitable for families looking for an independent or low-energy pet. If you enjoy an active lifestyle and want a loyal, affectionate companion, a Labrador may be the perfect choice for you.
